PLEASE HELP SAPE GET A NEW MIDDLE
EAST PENPAL PROGRAM STARTED ! ! !

When my Russian penpal and I started SAPE in 1989, Russia was still part of the USSR and the "Cold War" was still going on.  We were afraid that a war would start between our countries, but we hoped that if enough people had a friend in the other's country, someone they knew personally and cared about, that a war would never start.  Now, our two countries are friends and SAPE has been going strong for 16 years now.

In 1978, I was an exchange student with AFS Intercultural Programs.  Mine was the last group of AFS students ever to be sent to Iran.  I lived with a Muslim family in Tehran, Iran for 3 months.  I still consider them to be part of my family to this day.  What's going on in this part of the world really scares me and I feel that I have to do whatever I can, even though I'm just one person.  I feel like SAPE has already accomplished a lot, but now we need to do the same thing in another part of the world.

Today, the need for communication and understanding (and a program like SAPE) is most needed between between the people of the Middle East and people in other parts of the world (especially America).  We would like to start a similar kind of free penpal exchange between young people and their counterparts in Middle Eastern nations.  I'd like to start this off with a penpal exchange between Americans and Iranians, and then spread it to other countries.  To get this project started, we need money for office supplies (paper, envelopes, toner for the printer, and photocopies) and postage to send information to schools in the USA and in Iran and then later, to other Middle Eastern nations.

If you feel SAPE has done a good thing over the past 16 years in helping people to understand one another, please consider sending a donation to help us get this new program started.

If you don't want to make a donation of money, then please consider sending us postage stamps (either 37¢ or 80¢ stamps) or gift cards for Staples or OfficeMax (where we buy our office supplies) because that's really all we need to get this started.  All of the human help is free.

Please help us enable another generation of kids to make friends overseas.
